A WiFi QR code stores SSID, password, and security type in the WIFI:T:…;S:…;P:…;; format phone cameras already understand. On Freeqrify, use the generator → WiFi tab → download PNG (200–500px, error correction H). Nothing is uploaded.
What you need before generating
- SSID — exact network name (case-sensitive).
- Password — empty only if security is open (
nopass). - Security — usually WPA/WPA2; WEP and open are also offered.
Hidden SSIDs: some older scanners fail; prefer a visible guest SSID for public prints.
Steps
- Open the QR generator and select the WiFi tab.
- Enter SSID and password; pick WPA/WPA2 (or WEP / open).
- Optional: set size to 400 or 500 for print; keep dark modules on a light background.
- Generate, scan once with a phone, then download PNG.
Print and placement
- Print at least ~2×2 cm (0.8 in) with a quiet margin.
- Eye-level, decent light; label “Scan to join WiFi”.
- When the password changes, regenerate—the old PNG still encodes the old password.
Security habits
- Encode a guest network, not the LAN that holds personal devices.
- Do not post a main-network QR on public social media.
- Rotate guest passwords on a schedule and reprint.
Payload format (developers)
Example: WIFI:T:WPA;S:YourSSID;P:YourPassword;;. Escape special characters in SSID/password per the WiFi QR spec. Freeqrify builds this string for you.
WiFi QR FAQ
What string format does a WiFi QR use?
WIFI:T:WPA;S:YourSSID;P:YourPassword;; (or T:WEP / T:nopass). That is what the WiFi tab emits.
Should I encode my main home network?
Prefer a guest SSID for cafés, Airbnb binders, and event signs.
Many rooms or SSIDs?
Use Batch QR with type=wifi rows (ssid, password, security)—max 100 per ZIP. Walkthrough: batch from Excel.
