A PDF QR code stores a link, not the file. The square is the same kind of code as a website QR code. Phones open whatever address you paste. If that address is a PDF, the browser downloads or displays the document.
Put the PDF online first
- Upload the file somewhere that serves a public
https://address you control. A page on your own site, or a file host that does not expire the link, both work. - Open that address on your phone once, with Wi‑Fi off if you can, and confirm the PDF actually loads.
- Keep the same address if you later replace the file. Old printed codes keep working only while that URL still returns the document.
Make the code
- Open the QR code generator and stay on the URL tab.
- Paste the full PDF address. Do not swap it for a shortener you do not control.
- Generate the code and download the PNG.
- Scan the image with a phone before you print a box, a poster, or a handout. The PDF should open. No extra app is required.
Print it
- Leave a light margin around the square and do not stretch the image.
- Use a dark code on a light background.
- Add a short label such as “Scan for the PDF.”
- A long URL makes a denser square. Print it a little larger if the address is long.
Replacing the file at the same address does not need a new code. Moving the file to a new address does. The printed image cannot be edited later.
